HARDWARE COST CONTROL AT MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY Microchip Technology , a maker of microchips for cars, appliances, computer equipment and security systems, said it would cut its work force by 12 percent, or about 400 employees, and trim production by 24 percent. "We're seeing a slowdown across all segments of our business," Gordon Parnell, the chief financial officer, said. The company, based in Chandler, Ariz., has also deferred, from June 2002 to December 2002, the start of operations at a manufacturing plant it acquired last summer in Puyallup, Wash.
