Group pressing for a more democratic and tolerant Iran, with its three earlier newspapers shut down by court orders, goes step further this week by opening fourth daily that immediately sells out on Teheran's streets; conservative Muslim clerics have identified free-wheeling newspapers as most subversive of all their opponents; journalism has been a perilous profession since 1997, when election of reformist President, Mohammad Khatami, made it possible for independent newspapers to start probing into some of darkest corners of Iran's 20-year-old Islamic revolution; using courts under clerics' control and vigilantes known as 'followers of the party of God,' defenders of revolutionary orthodoxy have closed down score of publications, ransacked their offices, imprisoned editors and reporters, and administered beatings that have sent some victims to hospitals; photo of Hamidreza Jalaeiopour, who has been financial backer, editor and columnist for three reformist newspapers that have been ordered closed in last 16 months (L)

AMERICAN HOME ADOPTS MEASURE AGAINST TAKEOVERS

Date: 09 October 1999

By Bloomberg News

Bloomberg News

The American Home Products Corporation, maker of the most prescribed United States drug, Premarin, has adopted a plan to ward off hostile takeovers after reaching a $3.75 billion settlement on diet pills once used in the ''fen-phen'' combination. The plan, a so-called poison pill, would ''provide protection against coercive or unfair takeover tactics,'' the company said after the close of trading on Thursday. The plan is intended to protect shareholders' interests if an effort is made to acquire American Home at a price that does not reflect its true value, the company said. Analysts said they believed that American Home wanted to merge with a competitor but not at its current share price. The shares rose $1.8125 each yesterday, to $50.50.

Shares of 24/7 Media Inc. rose 17 percent amid speculation that the Internet advertising company was in talks to be acquired by a larger rival, Doubleclick Inc. The New York-based company's shares rose $6.875, to $47.375. Doubleclick rose $4.75 a share, to $136.625. In July, Doubleclick's chairman, Kevin J. O'Connor, said the company was seeking to buy more Internet advertising companies to expand ad sales that were now on more than 1,300 Web sites. 24/7 would be a good fit because it would add 150 Web sites to broaden Doubleclick's customer base and fend off rivals. Doubleclick is in talks to buy 24/7 Media for about $1.5 billion, the Silicon Alley Reporter Web site said.

The questions have a strong bearing on the bruising battle in Washington over whether the Senate should bless Washington's participation in the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which more than 150 nations have signed. 10 Mexican Flood Toll In Teziutlan, 110 miles east of Mexico City, soldiers attacking the earth with shovels and sledgehammers pulled 88 bodies from mounds of mud and crushed homes. Almost 300 have been confirmed dead in flooding and mudslides. (AP) NATIONAL 20-40 In Wisconsin, Doubts Grow As Welfare Benefits Expire In Wisconsin, the state that pioneered time limits for welfare, a handful of families have hit the deadline. Some experts are expressing doubts about a policy that cuts off benefits to people simply for staying in the program too long. 1 The Bible vs. the 'Big Bang' Scientific lessons about the origins of life have long been challenged in public schools, but some Bible literalists are now adding the reigning theory about the origin of the universe -- the 'Big Bang' hypothesis -- to their list of targets. 1 Gore Challenges Bradley Standing before 3,000 Iowa Democrats and his rival for the Democratic Presidential nomination, Vice President Al Gore challenged former Senator Bill Bradley to an immediate series of debates. 30 South Puts Gambling to Test Upcoming votes on proposals to ban video poker in South Carolina and approve a state lottery in Alabama will test the limits of gambling's growth in the South. 20 Ford Agreement With U.A.W. The decline is reflected in the shrinking number of blacks in the major leagues and in the primacy of basketball as the sport of choice among black youngsters in the city. 43 Trustees as Defenders of Art The board of trustees of the Brooklyn Museum of Art has long been a placid enclave for the rich and powerful of New York City. That changed two weeks ago when the trustees were summoned to the museum for a climactic meeting with the city's corporation counsel about whether to proceed with a a controversial exhibition of contemporary art. Suddenly these staid corporate leaders was transformed into angry champions for artistic freedom. 43 New Schedule Gains Ground In their quest to remake schools in recent years, education reformers in New York, Virginia, Colorado and other states have repeatedly turned to a schedule in which core courses like English, math, science, social studies and foreign language now meet in 80-minute marathons, every other day, with no course meeting two days in a row. Advocates of the schedule believe it gives teachers more time to probe topics in depth and gives adolescents fewer opportunities to get in trouble. 43 OBITUARIES 52-53 Walter Bergman An indefatigable civil rights advocate who was savagely beaten by members of the Ku Klux Klan in 1961 as one of the first Freedom Riders and won compensation for the attack from the F.B.I. more than two decades later, he was 100. 53 Robert G.
