They are also increasingly likely to have been trained by people with doctorates, but with little or no experience as reporters or editors. And, perhaps not surprisingly, graduate and undergraduate interest in journalism education is on the wane.

CBS Plans to Offer Time to Candidates In Presidential Race

CBS announced yesterday that it would provide free television time to the Presidential candidates for campaign statements in the final days before the November election. The time will be made available during CBS's news programs, network officials said, not during prime-time entertainment hours. CBS is the first of the three original broadcast networks to agree to try this approach, which has been championed by its own former anchor, Walter Cronkite, and a coalition of public-interest advocates. CBS gave few details yesterday on how long the candidates' statements would be, how frequently they might appear or what programs might include the statements.

The Horsehead Resource Development Company said yesterday that it intended to buy all of its common stock held by the public for $5.75 a share, so the company could be taken private. The repurchase would be made through a cash tender offer to public stockholders to begin within the next several days, the company said. Horsehead Resource is currently owned 50.3 percent by Horsehead Industries Inc., 44.9 percent by B.U.S. Berzelius Umwelt-Service A.G. and 4.8 percent by public stockholders. Horsehead Resource has about 36 million shares outstanding. The company's stock fell to $4.125 yesterday, off $1 a share, before trading was halted.

The electronic manufacturing concern EA Industries said yesterday that it had bought 11.7 percent of the Aydin Corporation from its chief executive for $10.75 million and had begun discussing a possible merger. EA Industries, based in West Long Branch, N.J., acquired 596,927 Aydin shares, for about $18 each. The chairman and chief executive of Aydin, Ayhan Hakimoglu, stepped down after the transaction and was replaced by I. Gary Bard, a director at Aydin. Aydin, based in Horsham, Pa., makes wireless and telecommunications equipment. It was unchanged at $15.50 a share.

The Great Lakes Chemical Corporation agreed on Sunday to acquire Nowsco Well Service Ltd. in a deal valued at $502 million. The offer exceeds a competing bid for Nowsco made by the BJ Services Company last month, which Nowsco rejected. Nowsco, based in Calgary, Alberta, provides well services to oil and natural-gas companies. Great Lakes, based in West Lafayette, Ind., offered to buy all 22.5 million outstanding shares of Nowsco, for $30.90 (Canadian) a share. BJ Services, of Houston, offered $27 (Canadian) a share. The shares jumped today past the price offered by Great Lakes, to $31.95 (Canadian), up $2.60 a share. Great Lakes produces specialty chemicals, including flame retardants, water treatments and petroleum additives. It also provides products and services to the oil and gas industry.

Sola International Inc. said yesterday that it had signed an agreement to acquire the closely held American Optical Corporation, an ophthalmic company, for $107 million in cash. American Optical, with annual revenues of $79 million, is based in Southbridge, Mass. It has units in Britain, France, Switzerland and Singapore. Sola International, based in Menlo Park, Calif., specializes in eyeglass lenses.

Leggett & Platt Inc. agreed yesterday to acquire the aluminum die-cast component maker Pace Industries for 5.2 million shares of common stock, valued at $118 million, and the assumption of about $200 million in debt. Leggett, a maker of components for home furnishings and other products based in Carthage, Mo., said that it expected to take a charge of $34 million, or 38 cents a share, in the second quarter in connection with the deal. Pace Industries, based in Fayetteville, Ark., makes aluminum gas-barbecue grill housings and exterior lighting and electric motor components.
