Arthur Kent and NBC News have patched up their differences. Mr. Kent, who gained attention as an NBC correspondent during the Persian Gulf war, was dismissed by the network in August 1992 after he refused an assignment in the Balkans. At the time, Mr. Kent accused the network's management of "incivility," "brute stupidity" and "unworthiness of command." He subsequently sued NBC for breach of contract.

Saying the crime struck at the heart of a free society, a judge imposed a sentence of life in prison without parole yesterday on a teen-ager convicted of killing Manuel de Dios Unanue, a journalist whose slaying prosecutors linked to a Colombian drug cartel angered by his writings. Moments after the defendant, Wilson Alejandro Mejia Velez, said, "I beg your honor to have mercy because I am innocent," Judge Edward R. Korman rejected the protestation and declared that the 19-year-old illegal immigrant from Colombia had "not only snuffed out in cold blood the life of another human being, he endangered the very rights that underlie a free society."

The Starbucks Corporation, a 300-store, specialty coffee chain based in Seattle, said yesterday that it had agreed to acquire Coffee Connection Inc. for an undisclosed amount of newly issued Starbucks common shares. The purchase of Coffee Connection, based in Boston, would speed the expansion plans of Starbucks into the East Coast market. Coffee Connection has 22 stores in three states. Shares of Starbucks rose $2.25, to $24.50, on Nasdaq. Separately, the Chock Full o'Nuts Corporation, based in New York City, said it had acquired Boston-based Quikava, which operates four specialty coffee, baked goods and snack kiosks, with another under construction.

The California Public Utilities Commission ordered the Pacific Gas and Electric Company yesterday to refund $115 million to its customers to make up for "imprudent" gas purchases from its Canadian subsidiary between 1988 and 1990. Regulators said the utility could have saved customers money had it bargained more aggressively with Canadian suppliers or bought cheaper gas from other sources. P.G.& E. said it would appeal the ruling. The refund includes $90 million in overpayments and $25 million in interest.

The chairman of the H. J. Heinz Company, Anthony J. F. O'Reilly, said yesterday that the company would acquire baby food businesses in Europe, India and South America in the next few weeks in a plan to achieve double-digit growth in the next fiscal year. The acquisitions and investments to expand Heinz's already sizable share of the baby food market would exceed $250 million, Mr. O'Reilly said in a speech in New York. Heinz ranks second to the Gerber Products Company in worldwide baby food sales.

A Federal bankruptcy judge has approved the plan of Gitano Group Inc. to sell its assets to Fruit of the Loom Inc. for $100 million. Gitano filed for bankruptcy protection from creditors earlier this month. United States Bankruptcy Judge Jeffry Gallet signed an order approving the asset sale late Monday, a clerk for the judge said. The judge approved the agreement once Fruit of the Loom, based in Chicago, agreed that it might be required to reinstate employees, depending on a ruling by the National Labor Relations Board, Gitano's lawyer, Michael E. Wiles, said.

The Mark Controls Corporation agreed yesterday to be acquired by the Danaher Corporation for about $127 million, or $17.75 a share. The company said a unit of Danaher would immediately begin a tender offer for shares of Mark Controls, a maker of industrial valves and other flow control products based in Skokie, Ill. Earlier this week, Mark Controls received an offer of $15.50 from the Crane Company, which threatened to initiate a hostile takeover effort. Mark Controls' stock rose $2 yesterday, to $17.875, in Nasdaq trading. Danaher, based in Washington, is a manufacturer of tools, liquid control systems and transportation products.

The U.S. Shoe Corporation, facing two shareholder proposals to overhaul its operations, hopes to file a response by next week, a spokesman, Robert Burton, said. He said the company would file the response with the Securities and Exchange Commission after consulting with its financial adviser. Two shareholder groups filed proposals in December seeking to reorganize the company after four years of slumping stock performance. One proposal, reported in The Wall Street Journal yesterday, was filed by two holders on behalf of Alfred Kingsley of New York-based Greenway Partners. The proposal would divide U.S. Shoe, based in Cincinnati, into a women's apparel company, a footwear company and an optical company. The other proposal, by the California Public Employees Retirement System, would require that all directors stand for election every year.

Talks broke off late tonight between the General Motors Corporation and the United Automobile Workers union with some progress toward an agreement to end a strike by 2,900 workers at two Delco Chassis brake part plants that could cost G.M. $15 million to $20 million a day in lost income. The negotiations were to resume on Wednesday morning, said Joe Hasenjager, president of the U.A.W.'s local 696.
