Times Mirror to Supply Information for Prodigy

The Times Mirror Company, the huge newspaper publisher, has made a deal to provide news, advertising and interactive services through the electronic network of the Prodigy Services Company, which provides information to computer users nationwide. The agreement announced yesterday, which includes Times Mirror's newspapers in Los Angeles and New York, is further evidence of the current rush by newspaper and magazine publishers to find electronic pathways for their information. Although many of the new ventures are essentially untested financially, the revenue potential is so great that many publishers feel they cannot stand idle as America wires itself .

The Government of Singapore, the prosperous city-state that is angling to become Asia's next great communications hub, has imposed circulation restrictions on another Western publication. This time the target is The Economist, the London-based news magazine, which was told this week that its circulation in Singapore will be capped at its current level of 7,500 and that the magazine will be required to post a bond of about $124,000.

It is easy to understand why "Punk," Carl Franklin's final thesis at the American Film Institute, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in directing, should have caught the eye of producers. This half-hour drama, the latest offering in the "Alive TV" series, has the freshness of youth and the conviction of talent. The focus is on 9-year-old Dominic, whose longing for a father, anxieties about sex and determination to be a man force him into a violent act that seems inevitable, although, of course, it settles nothing and leaves us wondering what else likable Dominic will be driven to do to prove to himself he is no punk.

FRUEHAUF REACHES A DEBT-REVAMPING AGREEMENT

The Fruehauf Trailer Corporation, based in Southfield, Mich., has reached a debt-restructuring agreement that would yield $45 million in new capital while giving majority control of the company to the Congress Financial Corporation. The capital, which includes $20 million in new equity as a result of the private placement of 13.3 million new shares to Congress Financial, will be available within about 15 days, the company said.

INTEL AND CYRIX SETTLE PATENT INFRINGEMENT DISPUTE

The Cyrix Corporation, a semiconductor design company, said yesterday that it had settled a longstanding patent dispute with the Intel Corporation. Shares of Cyrix jumped $2.875, to $28.25, in Nasdaq trading. Intel shares rose 75 cents, to $55.75.

Pepsico Inc. and Buenos Aires Embotelladora S.A., known as Baesa, said yesterday that they were in talks to form a joint venture in South America. Under the proposed venture, Pepsico will acquire an equity interest in Baesa, currently the exclusive bottler of Pepsi-Cola for the Buenos Aires metropolitan area. Baesa would acquire additional bottling businesses in South America. Further details were not disclosed.

Venture capitalist Arthur Rock, citing a potential conflict of interest, resigned yesterday from the board of Apple Computer Inc. Mr. Rock, a founder and board member of the Intel Corporation, said the new "perception of competition" between the two companies made it impossible for him to remain as a director of both. Mr. Rock pointed to advertising and news coverage that pits the PowerPC, a microprocessor developed by Motorola Inc., I.B.M. and Apple, against Intel's new Pentium chip.

Chrysler Stock Plan Extended

The Chrysler Corporation has extended by another month a program to reduce the number of its stockholders with fewer than 100 shares by allowing them to either sell or increase their holdings to exactly 100 shares at a reduced cost.
