Winners Announced for Kennedy Awards

Four reporters from The Detroit Free Press won the grand prize in the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards yesterday for a three-part series about preventable injuries and deaths in automotive-parts plants. The Robert F. Kennedy Book Award was awarded to "The Long Haul," the autobiography of the late Myles Horton. In 1932 Mr. Horton founded a school in Tennessee that in defiance of segregation laws, taught leadership skills to blacks and whites. The book was written with Herbert and Judith Kohl and published by Doubleday.

A biographical sketch on Wednesday about the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for criticism, David Shaw of The Los Angeles Times, referred incorrectly to his 1990 reporting about minority employment at newspapers including his own. What Mr. Shaw wrote was, "The Times is widely regarded -- particularly by blacks, inside the paper and out -- as having one of the poorest records for minority advancement of any major paper in the country."

The Grumman Corporation said it would reduce first-quarter earnings by $46.5 million to reflect a settlement with Tracor Aviation Inc., a Goleta, Calif. subcontractor that recently began bankruptcy proceedings. Grumman said the settlement was for a fraction of its claim, but the charge should not have a material effect on earnings.

U.S. Home Files For Bankruptcy

The U.S. Home Corporation, one of the nation's leading home builders, filed for protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the Federal Bankruptcy Code after failing to restructure $156 million in unsecured bank debt. The company said that in connection with the bankruptcy filing, it had received a $65 million financing commitment.
