Andre Ward

Andre Michael Ward (born February 23, 1984) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 2004 to 2017. He retired with an undefeated record and held multiple world championships in two weight classes, including unified super middleweight titles between 2009 and 2015, and unified light heavyweight titles between 2016 and 2017.

During his reign as light heavyweight champion, Ward was ranked as the world's best pound for pound boxer, by The Ring magazine. In 2020, he was named Fighter of the Decade by Sports Illustrated. In 2024, ESPN ranked him as the 7th greatest men's boxer of the 21st century.

As an amateur boxer, Ward won the light heavyweight gold medal at the 2004 Olympics and turned professional later that year. He rose to worldwide prominence upon entering the Super Six World Boxing Classic tournament in 2009, where he won the World Boxing Association (WBA) super middleweight title (Super version) from Mikkel Kessler in the opening group stage. In 2011, Ward defeated World Boxing Council (WBC) champion Carl Froch in the tournament final to unify the titles, as well as winning the vacant Ring magazine title. That same year, Ward was named Fighter of the Year by The Ring and the Boxing Writers' Association of America.

In 2016, following a long period of sporadic in-ring activity, Ward moved up to light heavyweight and won the WBA (Undisputed version), International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) titles from then-undefeated Sergey Kovalev. This earned Ward the Comeback of the Year award by The Ring. He successfully defended his titles in a rematch against Kovalev a year later, after which he retired from boxing. Ward was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2021, his first year of eligibility.

90TH BIRTHDAY FOR JOURNAL OF PALM BEACH SOCIETY

Date: 24 February 1984

By Ron Alexander

Ron Alexander

In 1894, when alligators were still residing in the swamps of what was being transformed into the premier resort town of Palm Beach, Fla., and long before they began showing up on short-sleeved sport shirts, The Palm Beach Daily News was born. Throughout the decades that followed, the paper became known as the grande dame of social publications. Last Sunday, celebrating with an afternoon garden party on the grounds of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum, for which 2,400 guests gave up polo, croquet and golf tournaments, the grande dame turned 90. In an age when similar publications in cities and resorts across the country have faded away, The Palm Beach Daiy News shines on.

PENTAGON MOVES TO SIMPLIFY CHAIN OF COMMAND TO BEIRUT

Date: 23 February 1984

By Richard Halloran

Richard Halloran

The Defense Department has established a new military command in Lebanon on a much shorter leash from Washington in an effort to give authorities here tighter control over operations there, Pentagon officials said today. The new chain of command, which cuts out three layers of military bureaucracy, reverses a principle espoused by Secretary of Defense Caspar W. Weinberger, who has said he preferred to rely on established channels and to delegate authority to commanders in the field. But Pentagon officials said Mr. Weinberger and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. John W. Vessey Jr., had found the former chain of command cumbersome and slow to respond. The order to mount an air raid from an aircraft carrier last December, for instance, gave pilots only four hours to prepare. Some flew without their planes being fully armed, officials said.

PRESIDENT'S NEWS CONFERENCE ON FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC ISSUES;

Date: 23 February 1984

Following is a transcript of President Reagan's news conference last night in Washington, as recorded by The New York Times: OPENING STATEMENT I have a short statement. Good evening. The Congress has returned, as you know, from its recess. Important business is pending and I'll be commenting on much of this in the weeks ahead. But tonight I want to highlight three matters at the top of the domestic agenda for the next 10 days. First is crime. The Senate is completing its work on the most sweeping anticrime bill in more than a decade. Our legislation provides a long overdue protection to law-abiding Americans and it would help put an end to the era of coddling criminals. The security of our people should take precedence over partisan politics, so I ask the House to stop dragging its feet and to act promptly.

HOW 3 YEARS HAVE CHANGED CBS NEWS

Date: 23 February 1984

By Peter Kerr

Peter Kerr

As CBS News approaches the third anniversary of Dan Rather as the anchor of ''Evening News,'' journalists and executives at the network say that those three years have been a time of important changes in style and content and in the personnel who manage the leading network news organization. Viewers of CBS News in those years have seen some tradition-steeped programs altered in an attempt to make them faster-paced and, at times, more entertaining. And a wide range of management changes have taken place to put persons in key positions who reflect the philosophy and style of Van Gordon Sauter, the executive vice president of the Broadcast Group; Edward M. Joyce, the news division president, and Mr. Rather.

Wirth, Democrat of Colorado, made the recommendation in letters to the presidents of ABC News, CBS News and NBC News.
